Story. Christian Loubotain.

Time goes by and I still write those posts about fascinating designers and their art work, and today I will tell you about the story of a magnificent brand Christian Louboutin and its' owner (yep, very unexpectedly!).

To begin with, year 1963 gave us a well-known in our days Christian Louboutin, who was born in Paris's 12th arrondissement in a family of Roger (he was an ébéniste or a professional in cabinet making) and a homemaker Irene. It's quite interesting that despite being French Christian's parents had Cameroonian origins. It is also known that there was three sisters in the family, who made a great influence on Christian's outlook: "In my childhood there were 4 women in my life (mother and 3 sisters), - tells the designer, - and for some moments they could completely forget that there was a little boy around them. And there began absolutely another talks: about periods, boyfriends, obvious and disgusting lies of men...I saw it all and I heard it all. Now I know almost everything about women".

Christian Louboutin

Like every creative person Christian Louboutin was a strange and difficult child. This can be proved by the fact that he was expelled from school 3 times. What is more, at the age of 12 he ran away from home and not to his friend's attic or garage, but to Egypt. After that he changed his place again and went to India, where he has been living for a year. But after these risky adventures Christian returns to Paris in 1981 and his mother allows him to live in his friend's house.

Egypt - amazing!

India - great source of inspiration as well...

I can see here both Egyptian and Indian tunes.

India, pure and charming India!!

When he returned home Christian Louboutin decided to create and organize a portfolio with his most complicated and elaborated sketches. Then he took it to the best fashion houses. Charles Jourdan was one of those people who became interested in the works of the designer and offered Luoboutin to work on him (don't forget, that Louboutin was 18 y.o.!).

Charles Jourdan

Well, now let's talk about the first pair of shoes that Louboutin constructed. It was made when he was 16 years old. Impressive, isn't it!? The age is so immature but nevertheless it affords young people with some desires to create a sterling pair of shoes. Moreover, Christian  tried to sell his first shoes on the most popular clubs' dance floors. At the same time he studied arts and crafts in Académie d'Art Roederer.

Académie d'Art Roederer.

Louboutin never loved shoes from the first time. He saw himself to be a landscape designer. But it turned out that, after his visit to the Musée national des Arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie, where he noticed a sign forbidding women in Africa wearing sharp stilettos from entering a building for fear of damage to the extensive wood flooring, he began thinking about the way that allowed not to take the shoes off in that cases.

Later he got acquainted with Roger Vivier (another great designer who clams to be the first to invent a studded stiletto) - and of course after that Christian Louboutin became a student or intern in Roger Vivier's atelier. At the same time Christian designs shoes for Chanel, YSL and Maud Frizon.

Chanel, YSL, Maud Frizon.

In the late 80s the designer decided to dedicate himself to the landscape design, but he got bored quickly and in 1991 he established his own brand "Christian Louboutin". His first customer was Princess Caroline of Monaco and of course Christian Louboutin became instantly famous. He is still veeeerrrry popular - Louboutin has topped the Luxury Institute's annual Luxury Brand Status Index (LBSI) for three years; the brand's offerings were declared the Most Prestigious Women's Shoes in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

The Most Prestigious Women's Shoes Luxury Brand Status Index.

Certainly, the most recognizable part of Louboutin's shoes is red sole, which came to our world by accident. Here is the story: Once, during one fashion show, Louboutin had a feeling that there is something missing in the model's look. At this very moment one of his co-workers was holding a red nail polish. Louboutin on spot imagined that he dyes the sole of the shoe with it - and this unexpected flash of inspiration became the signature of his shoes. Fortuity, you may say, but as time goes by some begin to understand that there is nothing random in our life. And now the only thing we have left is to admire these shining red heels...well, and to worship them :)

Story. Manolo Blahnik.

It's been a while since I wrote about shoes here. I promise this will happen more often now, especially when my exams are almost over *__*

What is the first brand to come to your mind when you hear something about red stiletto high-heels? What do you think about when reminiscing Sex and the City series or Carrie Bradshaw?
Without any doubts, if you thought about shoes - these were by Manolo Blahnik! Sophisticated sandals, extra comfortable heels, amazing shapes and forms - all these words characterize the genius of the designer. Yes, everybody knows this part, but nevertheless, what do we know about the life of Manolo Blanik before his triumph? Do we really aware of the history of the shoes we enjoy so much today? Honestly, I didn't know so much, so now I'd like to share every valuable detail of this great story with you, my dearest followers.

О чем вы думаете, когда вспоминаете серии Sex and the City или Carrie Bradshaw?
Manolo Blahnik!

The story of the designer begins in 1942 - the year of Manolo's birth in Santa Cruz de la Palma in the Canary Islands. He was born on November, 27 to a Czech father and Spanish mother. The family owned a banana plantation, where Manolo and his sister Evangelina were brought up and educated. "It was just bananas, the sea and us...a sort of paradise", - recalled the designer.

Manolo's mother somehow influenced on the future of her son, probably it is because the family was a frequent guest in Paris and Madrid - great cities of fashion, where she ordered clothes from her favorite couturiers, such as Cristobal Balenciaga. Her great passion was fashion magazines (Vogue, Silhuetos and Glamour). She even spent her free time making Catalan espadrilles from laces and ribbons and Manolo was often her student: "I'm sure I acquired my interest in shoes genetically or at least through my fingers, when I was allowed to touch them as they were made".

L’École du Louvre

Despite this evident interest Manolo's parents decided to enroll him at University of Geneva to study politics and law, but of course the young genius switched his degree to more convenient - literature and architecture. He graduated in 1965 and then decides to go to Paris to study art at  L’École des Beaux-Arts and L’École du Louvre. At the same time he worked at GO (a store of vintage clothes on Rue de Bonaparte).

In 1968 he moved to London after advise of his father, who enrolled him at a language school. I suppose it won't be a surprise to know that Manolo preferred watching films in cinemas to studying English in the evenings. Unfortunately, life in London is not so easy for students, that is why Manolo had to earn his living in boutiques, write to Vogue Italia and simultaneously dream about becoming a stage set designer.

Year 1971 was fatal for Manolo Blahnik: to that time he organized his portfolio and went to New York in order to find someone who could admit his talent. Luckily to Manolo, his friend from Paris, Paloma Picasso, arranged a meeting for him with the editor of US Vogue, Diana Vreeland, who honed in on his shoes and encouraged to concentrate on them. "How amusing. Amusing. You can do accessories very well. Why don't you do that? Go make shoes. Your shoes in these drawings are so amusing", - exclaimed Vreeland spotting a sketch of the legendary shoe which crept up the ankle entwined with ivy and cherries.

Thus he started to work on a boutique on Old Church street - Zapata, designing shoes for men, creative and unusual, vividly coloured and with the air of vintage, but they didn't satisfy his taste."What can you do with a proper English brogue? They can't really be improved upon without introducing the sort of fashion element I really don't like in men's clothing", - stated Manolo Blahnik some time ago. Fortunately the fate made a great gift for him. In 1972 one well-known designer - Ossie Clark - asked Manolo to create shoes for his collection. This collection included the legendary cherry shoes with extremely vertiginous heel. Funny thing that Manolo's creations were very risky to wear: "I forgot to put in heels that would support the shoe, when it got hot the heels started to wobble - it was like walking on quicksand", - confessed Manolo Blahnik.

In 1973 he realized that it was high time to buy Zapata from its owner and with his sister Evangelina started their own business with a £2.000 loan. Manolo Blahnik worked with fashion designers at that time, invented the joint collections with Jean Muir and Ossie Clark. The shoes had great success what can be proved by the Women's Wear Daily comment: "shoes which were, if not wearable, then certainly newsworthy".

The designer's fame spread among the celebrities, such as Jane Birkin, Lauren Bacall and in 1974 Manolo Blahnik became the first man to pose on the cover of British Vogue.

After some years of hard work Manolo appeared in the fashion scene of the US: in 1978 he launched a collection for the US retail chain Bloomingdales. The year after he opened his first shop in New York, on Madison Avenue. The business in the US became extremely successful after George Malkemus became responsible for this shop in 1982. After all in 1991 he opened his store in Hong Kong.
